The Meaning of Imminent, Update

As was discussed six months ago here in the Pub, apparently the meaning of imminent is not nearly as imminent as some people thought it was.  Well, better late than never I suppose.
“The condition that an operational  leader present an ‘imminent’ threat of violent attack against the United States does not require the United States to have clear evidence that a specific attack on U.S. persons and interests will take place in the immediate future,” the memo states.
Not sure whether the fact that this sort of mental leap is enshrined in a legal document should be comforting or depressing.

We are a society where a fair number of citizens hold fast to the notion that the immediate killing of a fellow citizen for the mere crime of illegal entry or a purse snatching is fully justified. Are "targeted assassinations" of an alleged "enemy" much of a stretch?

Long ago, I came to the conclusion that there are much more fundamental issues involved.
