Sincerity is the key to success - Once you can fake it, you've got it made

We regularly bemoan the disarray in American foreign and domestic policy. jim so aptly said, "We are GOOF BALLS". Recently, one Presidential contender made the following comment about the shooting tragedy in Aurora, CO: "Ann and I are deeply saddened by the news of the senseless violence that took the lives of 15 people in Colorado and injured dozens more. We are praying for the families and loved ones of the victims during this time of deep shock and immense grief. We expect that the person responsible for this terrible crime will be quickly brought to justice." One has to wonder how much interest a public figure has really put into a statement of sympathy when they misstate the number of fatalities they are commiserating over. Is the incident not really important enough to do better than just "close"? After all, even we folks in Europe knew the toll wasn't 15 at the time Mitt the Twit made his public statement. And then there's the Palestinian gaffe, where Mr Romney sucked up to the Israelis by saying that Israel's GDP-per-capita income is $21,000 while Palestine's is a paltry $10,000. Forget the possible racist slur towards the Palestinians, the actual figures are more like $31,000 and $1,500 respectively. Here's a major figure, on the road to boost his foreign policy image, and he makes a statement, trying to sound authoritative, and is so inaccurate in the figures he tosses around that it defies, at least for me, comprehension. What it leads me to wonder is if the people vying for the Presidency have such little respect for the electorate that they see no need to be reasonably accurate in their remarks. Here's a guy who is in the "courting stage", and his "best behavior" is effectively cavalier towards simple facts - from tragic loss of life to economics. But, after all is said and done, a major segment of the American population really have no respect for accuracy. If it feels good, then call it the inerrant truth. WASF because we are, indeed, GOOF BALLS.

  1. Al,
My personal disconnect with Mitt is his sincerity concerning his intent to bomb eyeran if he's elected. Incidentally if he is elected he can keep hrc as secstate since she espouses the same c/a.
I laugh when i consider that not one man in Mittland has worn a uniform for 4 generations in a time when the US saw fit to sling lead.
I'm 2nd gen Amie and my Dad has a combat action ribbon , and i saw all the movies and read the book about VN.
Obomba isn't much of a choice critter either, as i see it.
All chiefs and no indians. That sums up our political atmosphere.
BTW,ot Charlie Rose had a couple of coin critters on his show, and those bobos are still saying that if we do yaddi yaddi AFGH will turn into a mecca of wondrous proportions. All they need is a strong army and police force, which is something we didn't have for at least 80 years after we built our nation, and we had 3 major powers on our continent. All of whom were aggressive players, not to mention a few angry injins on our frontiers.
A strong army and equal police are forces of repression and not of democracy.
Neither mitt nor o get this little tidbit of info. And it was freely offered w/o think tank buckos .

  2. Al-

I liked Col. Lang's term "a pretentious display of mediocrity" to describe Mittens's initial excursion into foreign policy this campaign. He's playing to the notion that Bushevik party support is highest among the stupidest segment of the voting population . . .

Stating stupid and obviously false statements has no downside with this base . . . rather they've been conditioned to expect it.

  3. Seydlitz - There are a lot of smart guys on the other side that know Romney's limitations well, but will vote for him because he is in their tribe. Or maybe they will vote for him just to p1ss us libs and moderates off, hate is a powerful motivator.

  4. Professor Diamond, who's book Romney referred to, has taken exception to the Jerusalem speech:

It is not true that my book “Guns, Germs and Steel,” as Mr. Romney described it in a speech in Jerusalem, “basically says the physical characteristics of the land account for the differences in the success of the people that live there. There is iron ore on the land and so forth.”

That is so different from what my book actually says that I have to doubt whether Mr. Romney read it.

What is it about our political class that makes them confident in spouting inaccurate material?

  5. mike,
i try to vote for the dude with the best hair/haircut?
oh yeah, and they have to have a flag lapel pin.:)
The biggest weakness of our system is that it really doesn't offer the voter a distinct choice, nor are the parties bound to their campaign promises/platform.
For example GWB campaigned as being against nation building UNTIL he was elected, and then he was for it.
Neither party offer the nation a peace platform.
    This is sorry stuff.
