I'm RAPping on yer forehead, dude.

Speaking of the Koreas...here's a snapshot from this on-line album of photos taken from the last little dust-up the Koreas had this past November. The thing I noted about this UXO projo is that it appears to be what in the USFA we'd call a "RAP round" - a rocket-assisted projectile. Given that the stated distance from the DPRK shore to Yeonpyeongdo is about 12km and the maximum range of a standard 122mm projo is about 15km, it sounds as if the KPA is looking for a smidgen more stand-off for their little game of bitchslap.

No deep observation here, just noted in passing.

  3. Neither of us got the quotes exactly right.

"Consult . . . the Book of Armaments!"

"then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it"

Seriously, how does it work? Shot out of a gun then a rocket motor kicks in? And this is effective?

  4. If you want to avoid the irritating pop-ups (seriously, WTF, Global Security?) you've got the basic idea. Fire the projo, rocket kicks in, presto, longer range.

I should add that the ballistics are better than the Global Security article implies; a lot of the minPE problems they mention have been worked out. But this isn't a PGM, and the reality of ballistics is that the further from the muzzle the wider the probable error. So these were fine for the KPA lobbing at a freaking island. IF you were trying to, say, target an enemy artillery firing position you'd have a lot more trouble getting effects on the target.

  5. Sorry about the popups chief. I forget about them since I use an addon that blocks all of them.

  6. No sweat-di-dah. My browser is set to block most pop-ups, but somehow the GS site is exceptionally aggressive. I got something like four of them within fifteen seconds. They really need to find another moneymaking scheme...
